HbbTV opacity background: transparent GTK & Webkit ?

Postby SIP-Online » Mon Nov 11, 2013 7:23 pm

Hello everyone,
I have some questions on your web browser and its compatibility with "HbbTV" on "X11" environment.
For indeed , any page displaying the famous red button works like this : <body style="background: transparent;">
http://test-webkitgtk.sip-online.fr
http://itv.ard.de/ardstart/index.php?autoshow=1

Outside your web browser (WebKit) displays a white background which completely covers the entire video streaming and is not compatible with "HbbTV" .
I had worked on compatibility "HbbTV" with "Webkit" , and after long days of research it turns out that the lower versions of "Webkit" and "libsoup" allowed to do this , if you use a version recent will not work anymore because Apple to add a buffer system now displaying this horrible background.

Before going further in my explanation, I wanted to know if you are experiencing this problem, and if it can be resolved ?
If there is an alternative version "DirectFB" , which will ensure transparency and it will display the video in the background ...

Hi,

thank you for your question. The Smart TV Alliance (\"STA\") SDK 2.5 allows you to test your Smart TV application against the Smart TV Alliance specification which is based on HTML 5. The Smart TV Alliance specification is not related to HbbTV.

For further information on the Smart TV Alliance specification, please refer to \"https://developers.smarttv-alliance.org/specification\"

We hope this answers your question.

Hi SIP-Online,

We are working on HbbTV applications, which run on TVs that are STA 2.0/2.5 compatible without any problems.

However as already mentioned, the STA organization is defining the Smart TV, while HbbTV is covered by different organizations and specifications, even they are 80-90% compatible so far (This will probably change in the future, as there are many features related to the Smart TV, which are not available on HbbTV).

Note that TVs might have different rendering engine for the HbbTV (Most devices runs either the WebKit or PRESTO engine) then the one they use for the Smart TV part or it could be launched with different parameters.
